Although a high-definition upgrade didn't follow for 12 years, the Blu-ray retains the label's original numbering convention as Le Samouraï is a film that operates in the real world. However, it also can’t help but feel stylized. Much like a samurai film or a western, this movie features showdowns that require specific character placements and idyllic settings that can have the required audience and even set-dressing. The narrative is also off at times, but not enough to make a big deal over. I don’t think Le Samourai is as good as some make it out to be, but it is a solid flick and Criterion’s DVD is recommended.
